Ford Vehicle Data Control Center

During 2021, I was the lead designer on the Ford Vehicle Data Control Center and was managing a team of five designers in all aspects of research, interaction, and visual design for the product. During my time on the product, I established a design system and implemented a redesign of the dashboard.

No real data is shown in any mockups below. Only a sample of designs can be shown due to privacy.

Beauty in numbers

The Vehicle Data Control Center (VDCC) is Ford Motor Company’s “One Source of Truth” for all things data. It provides Ford Leadership access to all vehicle data, including feature usage, product health, and customer information.

During our discovery phase, we dove deep into the world of data, and numbers, as well as technology and human interaction, and what we came with, was the idea that while data can be hard and cold at times, there’s a sense of warmth and “Beauty in Numbers“.

VDCC Redesign

Based on extensive user interviews and usability testing, a redesign of VDCC was implemented including:

  • Revised information architecture and navigation based on card sorting results which lead to the creation of four main pillars of the product: vehicle programs, ecosystem health, customer insights, and financial health

  • New color palette and light mode option based on secondary research that visual performance tends to be better with light mode

  • Enhanced icon set and imagery for consistency across the product

  • Search experience to assist users in finding content more quickly

  • Higher level status indication on each page to help users understand the status of the company more quickly

Logo

The logo was inspired by connection and flow — the connection of the data and the users of the VDCC platform, and the flow of information from the people driving Ford’s vehicles to those in charge of making informed decisions based on that information.

A VDCC design system was created to help make designing and developing more efficient.
